Includes the following:
- Steel Ply migratory cover
- Steel Ply solid bottom board
- 2 painted 10 frame deep hive bodies
- 15 Frames
While this might be considered the economy version, we use this same equipment for our bees. The top and bottom is made from repurposed “steel-ply” which is used for concrete forms. Steel-ply is very durable and will last many years without any paint or other finish needed. It really should be called the eco-friendly hive kit because each kit saves almost 5 square foot of steel ply from going to the landfill.
The top cover is a migratory cover with a build in rim to allow feeding dry sugar/fondant and pollen patties as needed during different times of the year. The bees do build some burr comb in the top, however this allows you to gauge when to add more space for the bees. If they are starting to draw large amounts of fresh white new wax on the underside of the cover it is normally time to add another hive body or super.
The bottom board has a fixed entrance reducer that can be reduced down further if needed with a piece of 3/4″ wood. The bees will never need a bigger entrance than what is provided, large entrances are hard for the bees to defend.
The kit has 15 frames to allow room for the 5 frames from the nuc, hence it being “nuc ready.” We recommend you start the bees in the single hive and then put the second hive body on once they draw out about 80% of the frames in the bottom box. We highly recommend also purchase a frame feeder to feed your bees syrup to give them a extra boost in getting started.
